Abstract Welding is an indispensable manufacturing process in the shipbuilding industry. The fierce competition involved often necessitates a cost-effective and reliable welding method. In this study, weldabilities, microstructures some mechanical properties of ASTM A131 (Grade A) steel joints fabrication by submerged arc (SAW), metal active gas (MAG) plasma (PAW) have been investigated. welds were examined optical microscopy. determined microhardness measurements, tensile impact tests. results showed that strength reached up to 462 MPa. locations fractures always adjacent base metal. Charpy energy weld value 72.5 J, which was 25 % higher than at 57.7 J. A relatively high hardness 221 HV obtained PAW method compared 179
